Abstract

The objective of this study was to examine the self-esteem of young women who have faced rejections in marriage proposals. It was hypothesized that higher occurrences of marriage proposal rejection would lead to lower levels of self-esteem. Further, the study also explored differences in self-esteem between the student participants and employed participants. The study sample consisted of 226 young females, ranging in age from 18 to 35 (M=23.06, SD=4.104). The collection of the data was done through purposive sampling. Rosenberg's Self-esteem Scale (Rosenberg, 1965) was the major assessment tool used in the study. The findings indicated that there was no significant difference in self-esteem for the frequency of marriage proposal rejection. Additionally, there was no significant difference in self-esteem among young women based on their affiliation with educational institutes or organizations. This study concludes that future researchers to conduct longitudinal and qualitative studies in this regard.
